Online Marketing & Media Show 2008
The Online Marketing & Media Show 2008 was part of my networking triathlon on Tuesday 24th June 2008. Read about the other elements: the best view in the world; Windsor Festival 2008.
On walking into the Online Marketing & Media Show 2008 there was a presentation going on right in front of me. Excellent place to put the presentation as people know where to go for the seminar they were hoping to catch but it reminded me why I’m not a great fan of listening to seminars. The noise in the space, ouchhhhhh! I visualised myself drifting off to the sound of someone’s ego telling me how it is and swiftly moved on.
My mission was to talk to marketing & PR companies who could partner with us. I felt sure that web companies, unless they really know you, are going to feel threatened by our service and my suspicions were right. I did ask the question. Do you guys do everything yourself in house or do you work with partners to fulfil aspects of your projects? And most said we do it all in house... we don’t need anyone else! The irony of this statement... if they truly understood seo, then they would understand that no man is an island and that you need to work in partnership with fellow skilled craftsmen to make their clients' dreams come true.
I'm sure some meant : we don’t work with partners in the UK as then we’d have to share the fee and how the heck am I going to fill up my Porsche if I’m giving you a fair fee. No, we use very cheap labour in the Far East and keep the pie to ourselves. In this way we do our part to exacerbate the credit crunch effect but at least we have the wind in our hair!
Excuse the ramble chaps just needed to make a point – Keep Trade Local
There was a mix of stands and I enjoyed chatting with about 20 people about different things. You’ll see some of these elements implemented on our site over the coming months as we start to monetise what we have created.
What was reassuring is that we are ahead of the pack in the model we have but way behind in the monetisation stakes so it is this aspect that we need to explore in 2008 and put ourselves on track for a profitable 2009.
One chap told me that the gambling sites pay 40% share of someone’s losses and many of the top sites earn £100,000 per month from this income! So there is the most lucrative market but how would you feel each day knowing that someone is losing their shirt to pay for magnums of Champagne you are drinking winding down after a hard day at the pc adding another 1000 lucky winner stories!
It’s the last day of the show today so if you have a couple of hours to spare in Islington, get your butt along to the Online Marketing & Media Show 2008
